Fenced Off: The Suburbanization of American Politics by Juliet F. Gainsborough,
Since the 1980s a distinctive suburban politics has emerged in the United States, Juliet F. Gainsborough argues in Fenced Off. As suburbs have become less economically different political party and socially dependent on the central cities, suburban different political party and urban dwellers have diverged not only in their voting patterns but also in their thinking about national politics. While political reporters have long noted this difference, few quantitative studies have been conducted on suburbanization -- above different political party and beyond race or class -- as a political trend. Using census different political party and public opinion statistics, along with data on congressional districts different political party and party platforms, Gainsborough demonstrates that this "ideology of localism" weakens when suburbs experience city-like problems different political party and strengthens when racial different political party and economic differences with the nearby city increase. In addition, Gainsborough uses national survey data from the 1950s to the 1990s to show that a separate suburban politics has arisen only during the last two decades. Further, she argues, the political differences between urban different political party and suburban voters have found expression in changes in congressional representation different political party and new electoral strategies for the major political parties. As Congressional districts become increasingly suburban, "soccer moms" different political party and liveability agendas come to dominate party platforms, different political party and the needs of the urban poor disappear from political debate. Fenced Off uses the tools of political science to prove what political commentators have sensed -- that the suburbs offer a powerful voting bloc that is being courted with sophisticated new strategies.

The Politics of Cultural Differences: Social Change and Voter Mobilization Strategies in the Post-New Deal Period by David C. Leege,

The Politics of Cultural Differences: Social Change and Voter Mobilization Strategies in the Post-New Deal Period by David C. Leege,
How did Republicans manage to hold the White House through much of the past half century even as the Democratic Party held the hearts of most American voters? The authors of this groundbreaking study argue that they did so by doing what Democrats have also excelled at: triggering psychological mechanisms that deepen cultural divisions in the other party's coalition, thereby leading many of its voters either to choose the opposing ticket or to stay home. "The Politics of Cultural Differences is the first book to develop different political party and carefully test a general theory of cultural politics in the United States, one that offers a compelling new perspective on America's changing political order different political party and political conflict in the post-New Deal period (1960-1996). David Leege, Kenneth Wald, Brian Krueger, different political party and Paul Mueller move beyond existing scholarship by formulating a theory of campaign strategies that emphasizes cultural conflict regarding patriotism, race, gender, different political party and religion. Drawing on National Election Studies data, they find that Republican politicians deployed powerful symbols (e.g., "tax different political party and spend liberals") to channel targeted voters toward the minority party. And as partisanship approached parity in the 1990s, Democratic leaders proved as adept at deploying their own symbols, such as "a woman's right to choose, " to disassemble the Republican coalition. A blend of sophisticated theory different political party and advanced empirical tools, this book lays bare the cultural dimensions of American political life.
